About Prof. Dr. Nilgün Turhan

I graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1983 and completed my residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Zekai Tahir Burak Women’s Health Training and Research Hospital. Throughout my specialist training and subsequent academic career, I have worked across gynecology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, perinatology, menopause, and gynecologic surgery.

From 1989 to 1990, I continued my work in high-risk pregnancy and perinatology. In 1990–1991, I received international training in Reproductive Endocrinology, Infertility, and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) at the University of Modena in Italy. After returning to Türkiye, I worked in the Reproductive Endocrinology and IVF unit at Zekai Tahir Burak Women’s Health Training and Research Hospital.

I became an Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1994 and a Professor in 2000. During my academic career, I have served in senior academic and administrative roles, including Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Director and Responsible Physician of an IVF Center, Director of a Health Sciences Institute, Vice Dean, Senate Member, and Chair of Perinatology.

My clinical work is not limited to infertility and IVF. General gynecology, fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, menstrual and hormonal disorders, menopause, hysteroscopic and laparoscopic surgery, pregnancy, and women’s health across different stages of life are all important parts of my practice.

With more than 35 years of clinical and academic experience, my approach is to combine scientific evidence, clinical experience, and each patient’s individual needs while avoiding unnecessary tests and procedures and developing a personalised diagnostic and treatment plan.

  • General gynecology and women’s health
  • Gynecologic examination and ultrasound
  • Reproductive endocrinology and infertility
  • Diminished ovarian reserve, low AMH, and advanced reproductive age
  • Ovulation induction and intrauterine insemination (IUI)
  • IVF and ICSI treatment
  • Menstrual disorders and abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Uterine fibroids and uterus-preserving treatment approaches
  • Endometriosis and endometriomas (chocolate cysts)
  • Ovarian cysts and adnexal masses
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hormonal disorders
  • Pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, and pain during intercourse
  • Endometrial polyps and intrauterine adhesions
  • HPV, genital warts, and cervical screening
  • Menopause, perimenopause, and midlife women’s health
  • Hysteroscopy and hysteroscopic surgery

  • Hysterectomy and other gynecologic surgical procedures
  • Poor ovarian response
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Preconception counseling, pregnancy, and perinatology
  • High-risk pregnancy and fetal assessment

My Approach to Patient Care

I do not evaluate a patient only through a single diagnosis or treatment method. Age, hormonal status, gynecologic findings, fertility goals, pregnancy plans, the menopausal transition, and accompanying health conditions can all be interrelated.

I therefore develop diagnostic and treatment plans by considering the medical history, examination and ultrasound findings, necessary laboratory and imaging results, and the patient’s individual priorities. In gynecology, this may include observation, medical treatment, or surgery; in infertility, options can range from expectant management and ovulation induction to IUI and IVF/ICSI, depending on the clinical situation.

When surgery is indicated, I consider hysteroscopic, laparoscopic, and organ-preserving approaches where appropriate. In infertility and IVF treatment, I aim to build a realistic, evidence-based, and individualized plan based on age, ovarian reserve, and previous treatment response.

Prof. Dr. Nilgün Turhan is a Professor and Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Istanbul, Türkiye. She graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1983, completed her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at Zekai Tahir Burak Women’s Health Training and Research Hospital, and trained in Reproductive Endocrinology, Infertility, and IVF at the University of Modena, Italy, in 1990–1991.

What Are Prof. Dr. Nilgün Turhan’s Main Clinical Areas?

Her main clinical areas include general gynecology, fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, menstrual and hormonal disorders, PCOS, menopause, hysteroscopy, laparoscopic gynecologic surgery, infertility, diminished ovarian reserve, IVF/ICSI, pregnancy, and perinatology.

Does Prof. Dr. Nilgün Turhan Only Treat Infertility and IVF Patients?

No. Infertility and IVF are important areas of her expertise, but her clinical practice also covers general gynecology, gynecologic surgery, menopause, pregnancy, and women’s health across different stages of life.

Does Every Uterine Fibroid Require Surgery?

No. Management depends on symptoms, fibroid size and location, age, bleeding, fertility goals, and other clinical factors. Observation or medical management may be appropriate for some patients, while surgery may be considered in selected cases.

How Are Endometriosis and Endometriomas Treated?

Treatment is individualized according to pain, cyst characteristics, age, ovarian reserve, and fertility goals. Surgery is not necessary for every patient with endometriosis or an endometrioma.

When Are Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy Considered?

Laparoscopy may be considered for selected cases involving fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic adhesions, and other gynecologic surgical conditions. Hysteroscopy may be used to evaluate or treat endometrial polyps, submucosal fibroids, intrauterine adhesions, and other conditions affecting the uterine cavity.

Is Menopausal Hormone Therapy Suitable for Everyone?

No. Menopausal hormone therapy should be individualized according to age, time since menopause, symptoms, and personal breast, endometrial, cardiovascular, and thromboembolic risk factors.

Does an Infertility Evaluation Automatically Mean IVF?

No. Evaluation considers age, ovulation, ovarian reserve, the uterus and fallopian tubes, semen analysis, and pregnancy history. Depending on the findings, options may include expectant management, ovulation induction, IUI, or IVF/ICSI.

Does Low AMH Automatically Mean IVF Is Required?

No. AMH is one marker of ovarian reserve and does not by itself determine the chance of pregnancy or the appropriate treatment. It should be interpreted together with age, antral follicle count, menstrual pattern, previous treatment response, and other clinical findings.

How Is Infertility Evaluated in Women Over 40?

Because both oocyte quantity and, especially, oocyte quality decline with age, timely evaluation is important. Ovarian reserve, ultrasound findings, medical conditions, and partner factors are assessed together to create an individualized plan.

Can Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Be Evaluated?

Yes. Depending on the gestational age and characteristics of previous losses, evaluation may include uterine anatomy, genetic, endocrine, and selected other evidence-based factors, while avoiding unnecessary or poorly supported tests.

What Is Prof. Dr. Nilgün Turhan’s Academic Background?

She became an Associate Professor in 1994 and Professor in 2000. Her academic leadership roles have included Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology, IVF Center Director, Director of a Health Sciences Institute, and Chair of Perinatology.
